About this event

France, Italy and Spain are by far the largest wine producers in Europe. Between those 3 behemoths and the large volumes of wine coming from places such as Australia, New Zealand, South America and the USA, the wines of other parts of Europe are often overlooked.

Germany, Austria, Hungary and Greece make excellent wine, and yet most of their wines are not widely known here.

Join us as we sample 6 great wines from 4 countries of all styles, for example:

Germany's great gift to the world of wine is the Riesling grape. Traditionally fermented to partly sweet and low alcohol there are also modern fully dry versions to enjoy. Germany also makes increasingly good red wine, especially from Pinot Noir.

Austria's signature grape variety is Grüner Veltliner , making top quality dry white wine in a variety of styles.

Greece is one of the oldest wine-producing countries with a host of indigenous grape varieties, many of which are very tricky to pronounce such as Agiorgitiko, Xinomavro and Assyrtiko. We will sample at least one of these iconic wines.

Finally, we save one of the greatest wines in the world to the end. We will sample a Tokaji from Hungary. This lusciously sweet wine is made using "botrytised" grapes and has been for centuries - well before the Bordelais worked out how to make Sauternes.

A fabulous evening for the wine enthusiast, or just the curious.
