About this event
Our varietal tastings form part of a series of two-hour deep dive masterclasses focussing on a single grape variety. In each instalment we will explore their intrinsic characteristics by showcasing the most classical expressions from their traditional heartlands against their counterparts from lesser-explored winegrowing regions. Syrah, also known as Shiraz, is a fascinating grape variety with its deep core of juicy black fruits, beautiful perfume and evolutionary arc into the deliciously dark and savoury. Led by your expert wine tutor, this tasting will feature wines from Syrah’s spiritual homeland in the Northern Rhône Valley alongside those from more recently established regions such as Santa Barbara County in the United States and Swartland in South Africa. We will discuss various sub-themes such as climate, geology and winemaking in order to try and fully understand this wonderful variety in its myriad of iterations. Wines to be tasted: Apéritif: Berry Bros. & Rudd Champagne by Mailly, Grand Cru, Brut; 2024 Côtes-du-Rhône, Domaine Jamet, Rhône, France; 2023 Côte-Rôtie, Les Pierrelles, Domaine Paul Jaboulet Aîné, Rhône, France; 2022 Hermitage Rouge, Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud, Rhône, France; 2022 Trinity Hill, Syrah, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand; 2022 Eisenstone, Greenock Shiraz SR801, Barossa Valley, Australia; 2022 Iggy, Forreston, Syrah, Adelaide Hills, Australia; 2022 Mullineux, Granite Syrah, Swartland, South Africa; 2022 Mullineux, Schist Syrah, Swartland, South Africa; 2022 Tensley, Colson Canyon Vineyard Syrah, Santa Barbara County, California, USA; 2020 Cayuse Vineyards, En Cerise Syrah, Walla Walla Valley, Washington, USA; 2007 Torbreck, Runrig, Barossa Valley, Australia; 2001 Côte-Rôtie, La Turque, E.
