Battle of the Wines returns to The Queens Head on 20 November for a festive evening with TyneTipples, helping you discover the perfect wines for your Christmas Day table. From your first glass of morning fizz to the final spoonful of Christmas pudding, we’ll explore wines that make every stage of the day taste even better. Expect delicious food, friendly competition and plenty of festive cheer, without any of the usual wine snobbery. As always, we’ll welcome you with fizz on arrival. Think of it as inspiration for your Christmas morning glass! The evening switches slightly from our much-loved blind tasting battle format - these are the perfect pairings for your Xmas Dinners. With tasting notes you, your task is to taste and score each wine out of ten to find out the winners of each round. Each round comes with a festive dish, giving you the chance to discover how food changes the wine in your glass and decide which pairing deserves a place on your Christmas table. Round one: A festive first bite We’ll begin with breaded brie and cranberry sauce, served alongside two wines chosen to complement the creamy cheese, crisp coating and sweet, sharp cranberry flavours. Round two: The main event Yes, an actual Christmas dinner with all the trimmings! We’ll pour two wines we think pair perfectly with the festive feast. You’ll decide which one takes the crown, and perhaps settle the debate over what to serve with your own Christmas dinner. Round three: A sweet finish Christmas pudding with brandy sauce, paired with two dessert wines. Discover how a well-chosen sweet wine can bring out the rich fruit and spice of this Christmas classic. Throughout the evening, you’ll taste, compare and debate your favourites, with plenty of surprises along the way. Whether you’re wine curious or already have strong opinions, the focus is on flavour, enjoyment and finding bottles you love. We’ll also be selling the wines on the night, so you can pick up your favourites for Christmas Day or choose a gift for the wine lover in your life. As ever, a wine-themed quiz and spot prize giveaways will keep the competition flowing. At the end of the evening, we’ll total your scores and crown our festive Battle of the Wines winner.
